Strange Attractor
Experiments In A Quinary Landscape and other fields
audiovisual installations and live performances
Studio Soto, Boston and Harvestworks, New York, 2012
Curated by Jed Speare
"We gain so much from improvisation since it is so elemental. On its non-verbal, instinctual level it is a sophisticated form of play. All reason, ritual, remembrance, and ramifications go into it. What is the shared, cultural experience and what are the differences, unknown at the start? These create tensions with overlapping intentions that must be worked through, in real time by the performers. Don't play on the impulse? Wait a moment for it to pass and that when you do, develop the impulse inside the frame of gestures your event is within. That is composition and critical engagement in the moment and context of improvisation. You will have to have played on impulse before, when you began to learn your practice years ago, to know the difference. That is where effluence of sound in Strange Attractor goes to, in a knowledgeable, communal realm of surprises and equanimity."
