Soundcast 4 x 4 (+1)

Crawford Gallery, Cork, Ireland, July 2009
Curated by Dawn Williams

Soundcast 4 x 4 (+1) was a 4-hour continuous improvised sound performance in collaboration with Cork based sound artists Danny McCarthy and Mick O’Shea in the Sculpture Room of Crawford Gallery. The performance was recorded and forms the basis for the Soundcast 4 x 4 (+1) audio CD released by Crawford Art Gallery and Farpoint Recordindgs.

'Soundcast 4 x 4 (+1) presents a number of horizons and figures to its audience. Body, art, music, silence, improvisation, live performance, and individual activity are figures that can be differentiated against the grounds of their negative others. Put simply these figures are (and are not): space, music, noise, silence, rehearsed; recorded or collective. As you listen to Soundcast 4 x 4 (+ 1), I hope you find that it encourages you to be an active participant in the worlds it suggests. I hope you will make distinctions, imagine grounds, and identify figures. To be a listener like Wallace Stevens' The Snow Man:

"For the listener, who listens in the snow,
And, nothing himself, beholds
Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is."

from Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is
Francis Halsall, Oct. 2010
